A Little Party Never Killed Nobody

I turned 30 a month after the Baz Luhrmann movie Gatsby released. Inspired by the movie, the amazing soundtrack (Lana Del Rey!) and my love of the 20s I decided on a “Goodbye to my Roaring 20s Party.”

I searched all over Etsy for Gatsby inspired signs and could not find exactly what I was looking for. I decided I could make my own. Then someone said you could sell these. So I did. My Etsy shop was born.

My Party Essentials

Food: I was looking for something fun to serve and decided on Chinese takeout that could be served in mini Chinese takeout containers. According to Wikipedia:

By the 1920s, this cuisine, particularly chop suey, became popular among middle-class Americans.

Extras: Candy cigarettes, dice, peacock feathers, balloons, beads and everything gold. Gin and whiskey in brown paper bags. Cigars for guests who smoke.

Music: Anything 20s. I also played the Gatsby Soundtrack, because Lana.

Movie: I bought a 1920s black and white film to play on a TV in the rec room of our building, only to discover the TV wasn’t working. It was still a good thought.

Book: To get inspired reread The Great Gatsby (assuming you have already read it.) Anything by F. Scott Fitzgerald or Zelda Fitzgerald. Some of my other favorite books set in the 20s The Other Typist by Suzanne Rindell, The Paris Wife by Paula McLain, Fallen Beauty by Erika Robuck, Dollface: A Novel of the Roaring Twenties by Renee Rosen and Mrs. Hemingway by Naomi Wood.

The year 2020 is just two years away… I can’t wait to plan an actual 20s party in the 20s!
